Bat Protection
Optimizing Profits and Protecting Wildlife
Bringing Nature and Technology Together:
Efficient Bat Protection
Bat protection at wind farms is only possible through timely shutdowns of the turbines. The specific parameters for targeted shutdowns must be implemented precisely and monitored reliably for each wind farm location.
But what if there were a simple way to comply with all bat protection requirements relevant to your operating permits, reduce the operational workload, and at the same time boost your turbines’ productivity? At Fleximaus, we know it’s possible to balance these different demands. Drawing on many years of experience, we’ve developed intelligent software that helps you maximize your returns with minimal effort—while also protecting native bat populations.
Intelligent Technology for
Sustainable Bat Protection
Acoustic sensors and weather measurements analyze flight conditions and bat activity in your wind farm. Bat experts then develop site- or turbine-specific algorithms to effectively protect endangered bats.
The Fleximaus team is happy to assist you in optimizing bat protection in your wind farm with targeted solutions. The requirements are seamlessly incorporated into our Fleximaus Greenbox, ensuring high reliability with minimal downtime. This enables you to achieve the perfect balance between nature conservation and maximum energy yield.

Our System
in Operation
Using our example of application (8x Nordex N-117), we demonstrate how targeted optimization of wildlife protection not only strengthens biodiversity, but also reduces yield losses by approximately 1.7 million kWh per year.
A wind farm operator in Germany was urged to implement a voluntary bat monitoring as part of their construction permit but initially chose not to carry it out. To protect the bats, blanket shutdown criteria were applied—an approach commonly used in many wind farms. During the first years of operation, this led to annual yield losses of around 2.7 million kWh.
Using the FLEXICHECK, we were able to calculate that deploying our FLEXIMAUS software could reduce yield losses by approximately half. Once the contract for performance optimization was awarded, we initiated the bat monitoring. The results showed that bat protection measures could be more targeted and better adapted to the local behavior of the animals. The report also incorporated data from the FLEXIMAUS environmental sensors, further enhancing both bat protection and the operational performance of the wind farm.
Following thorough and constructive coordination with the relevant environmental authority, the bat protection was fully implemented using the FLEXIMAUS Greenbox—with all optimizations in place for both bat protection and wind farm operation.
By combining many small optimization steps, we were able to enhance wildlife protection while increasing the wind farm’s performance by 1.7 million kWh annually.

This is what makes the
Fleximaus Greenbox unique
Any new wind farm with an interface for third-party systems can be optimized using the Fleximaus Greenbox. We are also happy to assess the implementation of the Greenbox on your existing older turbines and retrofitting the necessary technology for profitable upgrades.
