Querstedt-Badingen: FLEXIBIRD Successfully Implemented for Enhanced Wildlife Protection
In Querstedt-Badingen, we have successfully completed another project that demonstrates how modern technology can combine wildlife protection with the efficient operation of wind turbines. With the installation of our FLEXIBIRD system, we were able to take targeted actions to protect wild birds and avoid unnecessary shutdowns.
Project Details
The challenge in the Querstedt-Badingen wind farm was that agricultural activities in the surrounding area often triggered shutdowns to minimize the collision risk for birds. However, many of these shutdowns were not always necessary.
With FLEXIBIRD, we implemented a solution that automatically detects agricultural activities and responds accordingly.
How the system works:
-
Camera-based Monitoring: Special cameras were installed on the towers of the wind turbines to detect movements in the surrounding area, particularly agricultural machines like tractors.
-
Automatic Notifications: The system sends real-time alerts to the technical operations team when a relevant movement is detected.
-
Targeted Shutdowns: Based on this information, wind turbines can be shut down precisely when necessary to minimize the risk for birds—only when it is truly needed.
Efficient Implementation with Strong Partners
For the installation of the camera systems, we partnered with Steady Climbing GmbH, who provided their expertise to ensure the secure and precise attachment of the technology to the wind turbines.
The Result: More Protection, Fewer Restrictions
Thanks to FLEXIBIRD, unnecessary shutdowns in Querstedt-Badingen were avoided without compromising wildlife protection. The wind farm now operates more efficiently while contributing to better protection for wild birds.
This project illustrates how innovative technologies can help maintain the balance between sustainable energy generation and nature conservation—while also increasing the efficiency of the turbines.
